The Sphere Next Stop: Abu Dhabi #YasIsland
The $1.7 billion immersive venue coming to Yas Island marks the first time the iconic entertainment landmark will land outside the United States — to redefine the Gulf's cultural scene.
When the original Sphere opened on the Las Vegas Strip in September 2023, it felt like a vision from another century — a colossal orb of programmable LEDs blazing over the Nevada desert, capable of turning a music concert into a full-body sensory event. Now, Abu Dhabi is about to get its own version. And it won't merely be a copy.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co. have confirmed a landmark partnership to build #SphereAbuDhabi on #YasIsland, nestled between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. With an estimated construction cost of US$1.7 billion and a targeted completion date of end-2029, this is the first Sphere venue to be built anywhere outside the United States.
The location is no accident. Yas Island is already one of the region's premier entertainment destinations — home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, and a Formula 1 circuit that draws global audiences every November. Dropping a Sphere into that orbit dramatically raises the island's international profile, and gives Abu Dhabi a year-round anchor for mega-events that rivals anything in the world.
The venue is designed around three distinct event formats. First, Sphere Experiences — the brand's signature multi-sensory productions that fill every surface with immersive visuals and sound. Second, concert residencies, welcoming both international acts and regional Arabic artists to a stage unlike anything the Gulf has seen before. Third, large-scale marquee events: think product launches, brand activations, and combat sports staged inside a venue that is itself the spectacle.
Plans include original Sphere Experiences rooted in Emirati heritage, and the display of Emirati artwork on the Exosphere — the venue's jaw-dropping spherical LED exterior. It is a rare opportunity to project local culture onto a truly global platform, in a format that reaches audiences who would never otherwise encounter it.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment Co., described Abu Dhabi as a natural home for the next venue, citing the city's infrastructure, cultural significance, and global standing. He called Sphere Abu Dhabi "the first step in building a truly global network of immersive venues" — signalling that this is not the last international Sphere the world will see.
